As we've seen, the men of the Easter Rising were well-educated and lived the words of Thomas Davis, "Educate and you may be free." They not only believed in freedom and independence for Ireland but recognized the vital importance of teaching and fighting for the language and maintaining the Irish culture. This belief was encapsulated in the writings of Patrick Pearse - "Not just an Irish Ireland but a free Ireland...not just a free Ireland but an Irish Ireland." While it was clear that the country was divided by the Rising, and still is, much of Ireland owes their independence from Britain today to the men who sacrificed their lives for the country.
