THE NARRATIVE AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Threats to freedom of speech, writing and action, though often trivial in isolation, are cumulative in their effect and, unless checked, lead to a general disrespect for the rights of the citizen. -George Orwell

THE 1916 EASTER RISING...AS GAEILGE, PARTS 4-5

  1. It is intriguing to consider how much more potent and successful the Easter Rising may have been if Eoin MacNeill had not sent out word across Ireland to "stand down". A question for which we'll never know the answer.
Interesting that Tomas MacDonagh's play at Abbey Theatre titled "When the Dawn Is Come" was a blueprint for the Easter Rising, including exactly seven main characters. As a poet, playwright, educator and would-be priest, MacDonagh is the fourth unique individual highlighted thus far in this series. That men from such various backgrounds came together with a common goal of an independent Ireland is fascinating. The unifying them to their brotherhood is of course love of country. The quotes from Tomas MacDonagh feature his talent while speaking of this love - "The national language is the nation's soul." "There is but one motive in all my actions, namely, the good of my country." "I am ready to die and I thank God that I die in so holy a cause." "I counted the cost of this and are ready to pay it." And a last letter to his wife Muriel, "but for your suffering, this would be all joy and glory."

"The greatest result of the Rising is the complete and amazing revival of Irish nationality. We have been asleep...now we have awakened to the knowledge that we really are a separate nation." - from Moira Regan's Story, New York Times, September 1916 found here...http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F1091FFB3F5D17738DDDA90A94D0405B868DF1D3
