THE NARRATIVE AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Threats to freedom of speech, writing and action, though often trivial in isolation, are cumulative in their effect and, unless checked, lead to a general disrespect for the rights of the citizen. -George Orwell

THE 1916 EASTER RISING...AS GAEILGE, PART 7

1 comment:

  1. In this episode we learn of Eamonn Ceannt and his passion for the culture and language of Ireland and, as such, was a member of the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge). While the Gaelic League had its roots in a cultural rather than a political movement, Eamonn Ceannt recognized that an independent Ireland would only have a chance to become a reality if the movement evolved from the cultural to a political and military movement. Not all in the League were in agreement.

On a side note - conspicuously and admirably for that period and in contrast with other associations, the Gaelic League accepted women on an equal basis from the start. They were not restricted to subordinate roles, but played an active part in leadership.
