TED CRUZ SPEECH AT VALUES VOTER SUMMIT
Millions of Americans across the country are currently observing Hispanic Heritage Month, in honor of the contributions of Hispanic-Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic and Latino culture. Just like the role they have played in the growth of our country, Hispanics have played an integral part in the long story of the Republican Party and in our nation’s political system. Here are 7 men and women who became the first Hispanics to hold their offices – and who are also Republicans.
Romualdo Pacheco - The first Hispanic elected to Congress and still the only Hispanic elected governor of California.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen - The first Hispanic female elected to Congress.
Octaviano Larrazolo - The first Hispanic U.S. Senator.
Alberto Gonzales - The first Hispanic U.S. Attorney General.
Antonia Coello Novello - The first Hispanic (and first female) U.S. Surgeon General.
Ben Fernandez - The first Hispanic to run for President of the United States.
Susana Martinez - The first female Hispanic in the country elected governor of a U.S. state. Martinez, who had been a Democrat, switched to the Republican Party in 1995, a story she told at the 2012 GOP convention.
