THE NARRATIVE AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Threats to freedom of speech, writing and action, though often trivial in isolation, are cumulative in their effect and, unless checked, lead to a general disrespect for the rights of the citizen. -George Orwell

THREE MARTINI LUNCH: DECEMBER 17, 2014

National Review's Jim Geraghty joins host Greg Corombos. Today's topics: New polls show Americans warming to the GOP, measuring the impact of Obama's "JV squad" comment about ISIS, and terrorist threats against the new Sony film The Interview.

WE SURRENDER!
It appears Sony has capitulated and decided to kill their new Kim Jong-un satire, The Interview. I sort of understood canceling the premiere if you were treating it as a bomb threat, but giving in to the demand that its entire run be abandoned? I thought we refuse to negotiate with terrorists. Team America World Police attacks North Korea with reckless abandon. What if the hackers demand that film be erased from history? It's on Pirate Bay right now. Should we hire hackers to hack the hackers? This is what happens when you let totalitarians run the show. They run amok.
When Terry Jones threatened to burn some Korans, Muslims threatened to kill him. Instead of telling them to fuck off, the American authorities capitulated and even Hillary Clinton begged him not to do it. He told her to fuck off and drenched the books in gasoline, wherein he was summarily arrested for "unlawfully conveying fuel."
Hillary had the same reaction when she was told Muslims were angered by a YouTube trailer that disparaged Mohammed. The movie was created by a Coptic Christian from Egypt. These people share the same religion as most Americans and they are under siege right now. We should be defending them, not jailing them. Big deal, says the American government, He made Muslims mad and we don't like them when they're mad. Hillary was guaranteeing a jail sentence for this guy before she knew who he was and what crime she was going to pin on him. A couple of years later, 60 Minutes covered the genocide of Coptics and failed to mention the way we treated this one lone filmmaker who dared to speak out. I'm not sure who hates Western culture more, us or them.
The non-Western world says they hate us and our first reaction is, "Well, we probably had it coming." Instead of getting angry at their irrational rage, we focus our energies on becoming more deserving of their love. We're more subordinate than their burqa-wearing wives. Extremist Muslims decapitate our citizens and we chastise the CIA for being too rough with them. The Taliban just blew up a school because they were angry at us for glorifying a young burn victim who wanted to read books. Where do I send my apology?
