Amnesty Activists Already Pressuring Hillary To Expand Obama's Amnesty

As predicted here less than a week ago, amnesty activists are already pressuring Hillary Clinton not only to renew President Obama's existing executive amnesty, but promise extend it even further.

Today on MSNBC's Daily Rundown, Latino Decisions previewed a new poll showing that 85 percent of Latino voters would be likely to support Hillary Clinton for president, but only if she promised to renew Obama's executive amnesty. Without that promise, support for Hillary among Latinos dropped to just 37 percent. 

Furthermore, the new Latino Decisions poll found that 73 percent of Latinos believe the next president should expand the executive amnesty program if Congress does not pass it's own amnesty bill.

Presente.org, one of the amnesty activist groups that helped pay for the Latino Decisions poll, even has a campaign titled, "4 Million Down. 7 Million To Go." And the amnesty activists have a point: if Obama has the executive power to grant amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants, then he also has the power to grant amnesty to all 11 million.

We'll soon find out if Hillary Clinton agrees...

The media's double standard on criticizing the children of famous people

It wasn't always this way. During the Bill Clinton presidency, the media imposed a level of self-restraint when it came to commentary about Chelsea Clinton that was so impressive that it didn't end until the younger Clinton went to work for NBC News. Almost as soon as the Bushes moved into the White House, that restraint went out the window for Jenna and Barbara Bush, the twin daughters of the president. The news media became very interested in their social lives, especially their normal adolescent flirtation with alcohol, using it to remind readers of Bush's status as a recovering alcoholic. Saturday Night Live even aired a skit about the two girls in 2004, ridiculing them for the opportunity to attack their father (and Dick Cheney). No one called for the firing of Lorne Michaels, Tina Fey, or Amy Poehler.

Skip forward a few years to 2008, when John McCain named Sarah Palin as his running mate. During the campaign, the media focused on the circumstances of Palin's fifth pregnancy, speculating openly that Trig had actually been the child of teenaged Bristol Palin.

No one lost a job over that baseless smear, nor did Carol Costello at CNN for this year's version of Palinoia. The Palin family made headlines for a fight that erupted at a party, which was certainly a legitimate news story. The CNN anchor, though, sounded positively gleeful to play the audio of a clearly traumatized Bristol describing how she had been assaulted. "Sit back and enjoy!" the CNN anchor told viewers. "This is quite possibly the best minute and a half of audio we've ever come across."

Costello had lectured viewers during the summer about "blaming the victim" when it came to domestic violence, after some blamed Janay Rice for staying in an abusive situation after getting assaulted by NFL running back Ray Rice, and Rice for committing violence in front of a camera. "Does that mean it's OK to deck your gal if no one is around to see it?" Costello asked. Less than two months later, the CNN anchor is chortling with glee over the younger Palin's assault.

That didn't result in a firing. It didn't even get a televised apology.

Finally, let's go back to a particularly close parallel to Lauten, in 2005. The Washington Post offered a fashion critique by Robin Givhan of Chief Justice John Roberts' children. "Separate the child from the clothes, which do not acknowledge trends, popular culture or the passing of time," Givhan wrote about their attire. "They are not classic; they are old-fashioned. These clothes are Old World, old money and a cut above the light-up/shoe-buying hoi polloi."

Did I mention that Jack and Josie Roberts were 5 and 4 years old at the time? Yet Givhan had no compunction about skewering them in order to paint their parents as snobs and out-of-touch aristocrats. The Post never apologized, and Givhan continued working there for another five years...

Landrieu not seeming to enjoy exciting runoff race

In the days following the election I heard some muted, yet marginally optimistic talk from Democrat activists who felt that the gloom and doom predictions for Mary Landrieu in the runoff were being overstated. The logic went something along these lines: once the media fever had broken and the massive flow of national dollars dried up, people would mostly go back about their daily lives. Under these conditions, her supporters felt, Mary could get back to the retail politicking where she has always excelled. Unfortunately for them, with every poll that comes out it seems to become clear that Barack Obama is still a big old albatross hanging around her neck, and she just can't shake him loose.

President Barack Obama may not be on Louisiana's Senate runoff ballot, but it's clear his widespread unpopularity in the state stands as Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's biggest hurdle to a fourth term.

Landrieu led an eight-candidate primary, but her 42 percent was only 16,000 votes ahead of Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy and far short of her 2008 totals when she won without a runoff. Exit polls explain the collapse: Landrieu got votes from 18 percent of whites, while nearly three out of four white voters said they strongly disapprove of the president.

"It's not so much a Mary thing as it is a Democrat thing and Obama thing," said restaurant owner Dean Gehbauer of Thibodaux.

If anything, the end of the general election may have hurt Landrieu. The public is still being flooded with advertisements reminding them of everything that's on the line, and external Republican forces really have nothing else to occupy their time these days, so they may as well make her miserable. Cassidy is well placed for funding, while all the Democrats saying lovely things about Landrieu don't seem to eager to flush additional millions into her special election.

Plus, it doesn't help her case too much when her own staffers are throwing her under the bus at every turn. Her Washington chief-of-staff Don Cravins was caught on video saying that liberals had nothing to worry about. If she wins another term, she'll be staying right in Obama's hip pocket...
