University apologizes to pro-life students for removing display

Yesterday I reported that the University of Alabama had removed Bama Students for Life's pro-life display only two days before its reserved one-month run was scheduled to end.

A school administrator told the group their display was taken down on February 6 due to complaints about photos it included of two mothers who died during abortions and two images of tiny abortion victims.

The group immediately retained Alliance Defending Freedom as legal counsel, sent the university a formal letter of complaint requesting an apology and another display opportunity, and scheduled two days of public events for February 19 and 20 to spotlight the school's denial of their First Amendment rights.

And voilà, yesterday afternoon the school apologized and reversed itself. Students for Life of America has released this email sent to BSFL from Carl Bacon, Assistant to the Vice President for Collaboration & Director of Ferguson Center Student Union.

Bama SFL will now use the two days planned this week for public outcry to re-erect their display. In a statement, BSFL and SFLA accepted the university's apology:

Bama Students for Life and Students for Life of America thank the University of Alabama officials for rethinking their decision and allowing pro-life students to openly express their First Amendment and free speech rights on campus.

I'd like to thank the University of Alabama for inadvertently helping to publicize the harm of abortion to both mothers and babies.

And I'm quite proud of BSFL, SFLA, and ADF for the strong, swift stand they took in defense of life and constitutional freedoms.
